The Scottish Government has today published a consultation on Safeguarding Scotland’s Resources which includes proposals for the mandatory charging of single-use carrier bags.
Commenting on the proposals SGF Chief Executive John Drummond said:
“A number of SGF members have been operating voluntary charging schemes for some time, donating the proceeds to local charities and good causes.
“We are therefore minded to support the policy in principle but will be working through the detail with the Scottish Government to ensure that the system adopted is fair to both retailers and consumers whilst maintaining existing charitable links.”
“Clearly there are a number of examples of mandatory bag charging in operation all over Europe but we believe that the Welsh experience is a good place to start.”
