Ahead of the Stage 1 debate on the Protection of Workers (Scotland) Bill, the Scottish Grocers’ Federation (SGF) has written to MSPs urging them to support the Bill at Stage 1 to allow for further scrutiny at Stage 2.
John Drummond, Chief Executive of the SGF said;
“Regrettably many violent incidents against shop workers result from them asking for proof of age or refusing the sale of age restricted products. Sadly many shop workers expect to be subjected to verbal and physical violence in the course of their work. This is simply not good enough. The measures in the Protection of Workers (Scotland) Bill would send out strong message to those that fail to respect shop workers and the valuable service they provide, that unacceptable behaviour will be punished.
“Local shops and their staff work in the heart of the community providing an important service to communities throughout Scotland. SGF believes the measures in this Bill will ensure retail staff receive the protection they deserve.
“SGF takes violence and abuse against retail staff extremely seriously and hopes all MSPs will do likewise.”
