Retail conditions continue to be weaker in Scotland

National statistics published today show that Scottish retail sales fell by 0.3 per cent in volume terms during the second quarter of 2012 whilst across Great Britain as a whole, retail sales grew by 0.1 per cent in volume terms.  This mirrors an Economic Briefing Report published today by the British Retail Consortium which shows that Scottish consumer confidence continues to lag behind the rest of the UK.

Commenting on the figures SGF Chief Executive John Drummond said:

“Retail performance continues to be weaker in Scotland than in other parts of the UK whilst Scottish households continue to remain more nervous about their budgets.

“The Scottish Government must be doing everything within its power to ensure a strong retail environment in Scotland.  Whilst the Small Business Bonus Scheme is welcome it should not be the end of the Scottish Government’s aspiration to support retailers.

“A holistic review of the many regulatory burdens which have been placed on retailers in recent years would go a long way in helping them through this difficult period.”
